About Laughing-Tree Photography

Where am I? Who are you? How the hell'd I get here???

You are here.
I am me. Glad to know ya.
Or not.
Yeah, probably not so glad to know ya after all.
You got here by traveling through a time-space continuum called the interwebs, invented by Al Gore.

About Kristen

Kristen currently resides in a small town in interior Alaska with her partner their dog Kasey, and the newly arrived devil dog Darby. Once a photo enthusiast in High School, Kristen took a break from photography in search of other things but the camera kept calling. A portion of what kept her from taking great pictures, in her opinion, was the lack of a decent camera. Her first SLR camera was nice, but it frequently ate batteries and every photo included a small image of a bug, permanently affixed to one of the camera mirrors. Her next camera, a digital point-and-shoot camera was fun but she was frequently disappointed with the quality of the photographs she took.

After befriending several photo enthusiasts, including one who works part-time as a professional wedding photographer, one novice photographer who recently had her first showing in PA, and a few Alaskan photography geeks, Jason and Ducky, she learned a lot. From the wedding-photographer she learned that a good DSLR camera and Adobe Photoshop can do just about anything you want it to, even with the most inexpensive lenses. The novice taught her that a good DSLR is not necessary to take good pictures - every photo in her showing was taken with a basic digital point-and-shoot camera! And Jason and Ducky lead great photo safari adventures in interior Alaska that are always insightful and full of camera tricks of the trade, if not also freezing cold!

While graced with the privilege of living in nature's back yard, Kristen is not a landscape photographer, landscape shots, for the most part bore her. She enjoys photographing objects, animate and inanimate, and has found a muse in one dog, a Weimaraner puppy she met while on vacation, named Duke. Several attempts at convincing her partner that a Weimaraner puppy is the key to all happiness, and great photos have been unsuccessful as of late. While waiting for a puppy, Kristen's other subjects include ducks, moose, buildings, and local plant life among anything else that suits her fancy at any given time.

The Camera

After suffering the pain of having only a basic digital point-and-shoot while living in Michigan for six years, Kristen purchased her first digital SLR camera upon her return to Alaska. Her Nikon D-60 is her pride and joy and frequently comes to work and anywhere else she goes.

Alaskan photographers, local to my neck of the woods.

Sites I'm Stalking

  • The Pioneer Woman - Ree Drummond, she cooks, she takes amazing photos, she cleans, she has COWS! How can you not love a site that frequently features things like cows, mustang horses, child labor, cowboy jean butts (though I'd like to see a little more cowgirl action in the mix), and cow poo?

  • Dooce - Heather B. Armstrong, wrote a blog about her job, got fired, and now blogs full time and takes great photos! I want to be like her when I grow up, minus the kids, but with the dogs.

  • Blurbomat - Jon Armstrong, AKA Dooce's husband

  • Digital Photography School - Excellent learning guide and daily blog
